Ship Un-Given Up

Voyage reinstated before the driveway ice finished melting. Camp moves one river east; flag reportedly indifferent about which river finds it.
By the Camp Master · Filed eastbound on Highway 206

The ship, given up in these very pages on Tuesday, has been taken back. Don’t Give Up The Ship II sails after all — not to Maupin, which remains behind a fire and firmly off the table, but to Cottonwood Canyon State Park on the John Day River, where the group camp is named, with an honesty this organization can only aspire to, End of the Road. The cancellation lasted roughly a day and a half — described by sources close to the Camp Master as “the longest he has ever let a plan stay dead.” Asked to comment on the reversal, he referred reporters to the flag, which says what it says.

⚠ This part is not satire

Nothing about last week’s notice has changed: the Grasshopper Fire is still burning and the Maupin road is still not ours to use. Do not drive to Maupin.

The new camp sits outside the fire area and the smoke: Cottonwood Canyon State Park — End of the Road Group Camp, on the John Day River off Highway 206 between Wasco and Condon. Reserved and paid, Thursday Aug 13 through Sunday Aug 16, three nights. This is a camp-and-river weekend, not a raft trip — no rapids, warm water, bring floaties, rods, and your own life vests.

Vanderford Rules Relocation ‘Legally The Same Ship’

Nigel Vanderford, the river’s foremost authority per a panel consisting entirely of Nigel Vanderford, has ruled the relocated voyage legally continuous with the original, under the doctrine — his — that the ship is wherever the flag hangs. He cites controlling precedent: Perry himself abandoned the Lawrence mid-battle at Lake Erie, rowed the flag over to the Niagara, and won anyway. “They named the whole thing after the flag, not the boat,” he observed, adding, per this paper’s style guide, that he is definitely not a lawyer.

Driveway Ice Recalled To Active Duty

The ice reported melting in a Portland driveway in Tuesday’s edition has been recalled to active duty, vindicating Jake Stevens, who bought it before the cancellation and refused, on principle, to let it become margaritas. “I knew,” said Mr. Stevens, incorrectly — but for the first time in six seasons the record supports him. The Corrections desk confirms this is also the first time Mr. Stevens and the ice have arrived at the same conclusion.

Man Refuses To Give Up Ship He Was Specifically Told Was Given Up

A previous edition reported that Camp Master Jeff Mumford — six-time ‘Most Prepared Man Alive,’ holder of between 2 and 12 of every conceivable object — did not own a spare Highway 197. Accurate, the follow-up investigation confirms, but incomplete. An audit of the remaining inventory found no road, but did find: a brain, a hunger for the outdoors, and a deep history and knowledge of the terrain of Oregon. Witnesses describe him spreading the state map across a tailgate, dragging one finger east out of the smoke, and stopping on the one river canyon in Oregon without a fire in it. “There,” he said. The group camp was booked and paid for by 8:49 the next morning.

The flag, sources confirm, never specified a river. It says one thing. It does not say “consult the road conditions.”

Corrections — Tuesday’s edition ran the headline “Ship Given Up.” We regret the error. The error was believing him.

Ship Given Up

Second voyage scrubbed with the advance team already packed. Zero casualties promised; zero casualties delivered, by a technicality nobody wanted.
By the Camp Master · Filed from the driveway

After one maiden voyage, six months of planning, and a meal roster that never advanced past “TBD,” the Camping Team’s aquatics division announces that Don’t Give Up The Ship II will not sail. The flag stays in the truck. The steaks stay in the freezer. Oak Springs will have to squat on itself. The name has held up for forty years and two generations. It buckles this week.

⚠ This part is not satire

The Grasshopper Fire has burned more than 77,000 acres east of Mount Hood and is 20% contained. It is running between Highways 35 and 197 — and 197 is the road every one of us takes to Maupin. Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders are in place west of 197 around Dufur; Tygh Valley is at Level 2; Wasco County canceled its own county fair over fire danger and smoke. Nearly 1,800 personnel are assigned. A fire weather watch runs through Friday morning for thunderstorms, lightning, and 40 mph gusts — Thursday through Saturday of our trip.

The Deschutes reopened to boaters on August 10. The river is not the problem. One road into a basalt canyon, with a fire on it and a lightning event forecast mid-trip, is the problem.

DGUTS '26 is canceled. Do not drive to Maupin. No money was collected; there is nothing to unwind. If you know anyone in Wamic, Tygh Valley, or Dufur, this is a good week to call them.

Jake Stevens Blameless For First Time In Six Seasons

Local man Jake Stevens has been formally cleared of responsibility for this year’s cancellation, ending a six-season streak. Mr. Stevens is understood to have already purchased ice. This paper has confirmed the ice exists and is, at press time, melting in a driveway in Portland — a fate leadership describes as “poetic” and “still somehow his fault, spiritually.” The Corrections desk is reviewing whether to retract the retraction.

River Authority

Vanderford: ‘The Ship Will Not Be Given Up.’ Ship Given Up.

Nigel Vanderford, the river’s foremost authority per a panel consisting entirely of Nigel Vanderford, noted that Perry flew the flag at Lake Erie in 1813 under conditions that did not include a Level 3 evacuation zone. “Perry also had somewhere to go,” he added, “definitely not as a lawyer.” The flag, he confirms, stays up. Just not this week, and not there.

Man Who Owns 12 Of Everything Owns Zero Roads

Camp Master Jeff Mumford — six-time ‘Most Prepared Man Alive,’ holder of between 2 and 12 of every conceivable object — has confirmed he does not have a spare Highway 197. Sources say he checked. Twice. He then checked the fire map, the flow gauge, the evacuation map, and the forecast, in that order, and called it. “I’ve made some questionable calls on this trip,” he said. “This one isn’t.”

For Second Voyage

Crew summoned to Oak Springs for five days on the Deschutes, Aug. 12–16. Zero casualties promised; ice supply reported “still insufficient.”

Jeff Mumford Named ‘Most Prepared Man Alive’ For Sixth Straight Year

Camp Master Jeff Mumford has again swept the awards no one else was allowed to enter. Sources confirm Mr. Mumford owns “between 2 and 12” of every conceivable object and will loan you a sleeping bag, a shade structure, a spare shade structure, and a headlamp you didn’t know you needed. “If you require any gear, clothing, or camp-related item,” he is said to repeat, “I likely have several.” Analysts called the canopy game “frankly show-offy.”

Nigel Vanderford Confirmed Foremost Mind On The River — Still Not A Lawyer

Guide, mascot, and self-described intellectual thought leader Nigel Vanderford has once more been declared the river’s foremost authority by a panel consisting entirely of Nigel Vanderford. He will read the water, name the rapids, and answer legal questions with the disclaimer “*definitely not even a lawyer, much less your lawyer.*” The flag, he reminds all, stays up. The ship, he insists, will not be given up.

Developing Story

Jake Stevens Forgets The Ice. Again. Sources ‘Not Even Mad, Just Disappointed.’

Local man Jake Stevens has once again arrived at the put-in with vibes, opinions, and no ice — a role he has now held for six consecutive seasons. Witnesses report Mr. Stevens “gestured confidently toward a cooler that turned out to be empty,” before asking whether anyone had service. The FAQ, which he has never read, addresses this directly.

Camp leadership issued a brief statement: “Bring ice. Never enough ice.” It is understood to be directed at one specific person.

Stevens Exits Raft On Water Rated ‘Basically A Puddle’

In an unscheduled baptism, Jake Stevens entered the Deschutes on a flat stretch described by three separate crewmates as “not even a rapid.” He was recovered by whatever was grabbable. Splash bragging rights: forfeited.

Op-Ed

In Praise Of Benevolent Leadership

This paper endorses Jeff & Nigel for every position, elected or invented. Under their steady oars the books balance, the steaks land, and no one is lost. We ask only that they keep packing 12 of everything. — The Editorial Board (Jeff & Nigel)

Corrections

A Note On Jake Stevens

A previous edition described Jake Stevens as “helpful at camp.” This was a typo. We regret the error. Mr. Stevens remains, per our style guide, the reason we now count the coolers twice.

Classifieds — FOUND: the missing lens from Jake’s $7 gas-station sunglasses (five years later). WANTED: a shuttle driver who is not Jake. FOR SALE: one (1) cooler, gently emptied. LOST: Jake’s sense of direction, last seen upstream.
